Best Solar Installer in Manchester? What Five Independent Inspections Taught Us About Solar Quality

The best solar installer in Manchester isn’t the company that fits the most panels or quotes the lowest price. It’s the one that takes responsibility for the design, installation, commissioning, documentation and long-term performance of your system. Last month we independently inspected five solar and battery installations. Every one of them showed why that matters.

When Prices Rise, Quality Is the First Thing to Suffer

Electricity costs are still squeezing British businesses. Calls for urgent action on business energy bills keep growing, and more organisations are turning to solar and battery storage to take back control.

That’s good news. But as demand rises, installers get busier, jobs move faster, and quality is usually the first thing to suffer. Commissioning gets rushed. Paperwork goes missing. Monitoring gets left “for later”.

As an independent consultancy, we’re the people called in when something doesn’t add up. Here’s what we found last month.

Five Inspections. Five Very Different Problems.

1. A Home Battery Sitting on the Loft Joists

At a residential property, the battery storage system had simply been placed across the loft joists. There was no proper structural support, no consideration of manufacturer location requirements, and no thought given to fire safety or access. These decisions belong at the design stage, not at an inspection after the fact.

2. A Factory Battery That Was Never Connected

A factory had paid for battery storage to help manage its demand. The battery was on site and installed, but it wasn’t connected into the system. The business had been paying for an asset that did nothing. Installing equipment and handing over a working, commissioned system are not the same thing.

3. A Working Men’s Club With the Basics Missing

At a working men’s club we found no PV warning signage, no DC isolation, no documentation and no metering. Without those, the building owner can’t operate the system safely, can’t show it was properly completed, and can’t tell whether it’s generating what it should.

4. A Warehouse Running at Around 10%

A local warehouse’s solar array had a inverter limitation applied that shouldn’t have been there. Panels, inverters and cabling were all in place, but the settings throttled the system to roughly 10% of its expected output. A settings problem cost this business most of the generation it had paid for.

5. A Commercial Site Running at 25–30%, and Nobody Knew

At a commercial site with no metering or monitoring, three inverters had tripped and shut down. The strings weren’t properly identified, which made fault-finding slow and allowed the faults to drag down the wider system. The whole installation was delivering only about 25–30% of its expected performance. With no monitoring, nobody was alerted.

All examples are anonymised to protect our clients. They describe the installations we inspected and are not a judgement on the solar industry as a whole. There are many excellent installers out there.

So What Does “Best Solar Installer” Actually Mean?

Whether you’re searching for the best solar installer in Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Hull, Birmingham or London, look past the headline price and ask:

  • Who is responsible for the design, and is it based on your actual consumption? Check the electricity price assumptions behind the savings figures. An inflated unit rate or an optimistic annual price rise can make a weak payback look great on paper.
  • Who checks the roof and the electrical infrastructure before anything goes up? Is it a qualified structural engineer, or the installer’s own team taking a look from the ladder?
  • Who handles the DNO application and makes sure export limits are set correctly? And who gets your MCS certificate and Smart Export Guarantee registration sorted at handover? You don’t want to be chasing that two years down the line.
  • Who commissions the system and gives you the test records? Too often it’s a subcontractor you’ve never met and nobody has vetted. Ask who they are, and ask for the full test results.
  • Who provides metering and monitoring, so faults are spotted in days rather than months? Is there a monthly fee, and who actually watches the alerts?
  • Who takes responsibility if the system underperforms? What is the performance benchmark, and how will it be checked? Get the expected annual generation in writing, and agree how actual output will be measured against it.

If the answers are vague, that tells you something.

Why We Now Offer Full Turnkey Solar Delivery

ISC started as an independent consultancy covering inspections, feasibility and design. Seeing installations like these, month after month, is exactly why we now offer full turnkey solar and battery project delivery.

We remain vendor-neutral, independent of manufacturers and electricity suppliers, and we’ll still tell you if solar or battery isn’t right for your building. Where it is, we can take the project from start to finish:

  • Feasibility studies and financial assessment
  • Solar PV and battery storage design
  • Roof and structural assessment coordination
  • DNO applications and grid connection management
  • Equipment specification and procurement
  • Installation through our trusted, long-standing installer partners
  • Commissioning, metering and monitoring
  • Full documentation, handover and maintenance planning

Already Have a Contractor? We’ll Manage Them for You

You don’t have to switch installers to get independent oversight. We can project-manage your contractors: reviewing the design, checking quality on site, verifying commissioning and making sure the finished system matches the specification you paid for.

This works especially well for commercial landlords, facilities managers, developers and businesses with several sites.

On the Road: Multi-Site Solar Across the UK

We’re Greater Manchester based but deliver nationwide, with current work spanning Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Hull, Birmingham and London.

We’ve also been asked to scope several multi-site installations, so over the next few weeks we’re heading out on the road to assess properties, review existing systems and plan new projects. Wish us luck on the road trip!

For multi-site organisations, a consistent approach to feasibility, design, quality and reporting across the whole portfolio means you invest first where the returns are strongest.

Has Your Solar Portfolio Been Independently Checked?

If you have solar on one building or fifty, ask yourself:

  • Is every inverter running right now?
  • Are your batteries actually connected and cycling?
  • Is an export limit quietly throttling your generation?
  • Do you have commissioning records, metering and monitoring?
  • Does real generation match what the design promised?

If you’re not sure, an independent inspection is the place to start.

Already got solar? Let’s check it’s working. Planning solar? Let’s get it right first time. Managing multiple sites? Let’s look at the portfolio together.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find the best solar installer in Manchester? Look for an installer who takes responsibility for design, DNO applications, commissioning, documentation and monitoring, not just fitting panels. Ask for commissioning records and references from similar projects.

How do I know if my solar system is underperforming? Compare actual generation with the design estimate. With no metering or monitoring you can’t tell, which is how systems end up running at 10–30% unnoticed.

Can an export limit reduce my solar output? Yes. An incorrectly applied grid or export limitation can severely restrict generation. Settings should match your DNO approval and how your site uses its power.

Can you manage my existing solar contractor? Yes. We provide independent project management and quality oversight of other contractors, as well as full turnkey delivery.

Do you work outside Greater Manchester? Yes. We’re based in Greater Manchester and deliver nationwide, including multi-site portfolios.
